Norland celebrates student achievements at Heritage Day 2024
3 June 2024
Norland is proud to celebrate Heritage Day 2024. Heritage Day is a very special annual event which provides a platform for final-year students to showcase their incredible creative talents honed over their three years of diploma classes at Norland.
On 31 May, Norland held its annual Heritage Day celebrations with families, loved ones and placement families in attendance. Students in their final year, Set 45, set up themed displays in groups which demonstrated their creative talents in sewing and food and nutrition classes. The displays featured many of the wonderful projects they have worked on during their three years at Norland and covered a range of themes from a cinema-themed film showcase to a Norland bear hunt exploration.
The very first Heritage Day as we know it today was held on 1 July 2003 for Set 25, when it was known as Display Day. The event heralded a new tradition for Norland and marked its move from Denford Park to its new home in Bath that year. Norlanders, future students and children from local schools were invited to Norland to view the creative works by students, which included fancy dress costumes, treasure baskets, wooden toys and mobiles. The following year, the event was held at the Bath Assembly Rooms.
The event has gone from strength to strength in the past 25 years, growing in parallel with the Norland degree and diploma training programme.
This year’s Heritage Day was held at Kingswood School in Bath. In the morning, families, friends and loved ones of the students were invited to tour their displays, and see the amazing work including capes, quilts, toys and aprons that made up the displays. Then, in the afternoon, the Heritage Day awards ceremony took place. During the ceremony, awards were given for students demonstrating skills and dedication in baking, sewing, placements, charity work, along with being a brand ambassador. The Norland choir performed, and principal Dr Janet Rose gave a speech thanking the students for their hard work.
The celebration was a special occasion for students in set 45, who will be setting out on the Newly Qualified Nanny (NQN) year following the end of term in June of this year.
