“I think applying as a mature student was probably one of the best things I could have done” – Genna’s story
Mature student Genna joined Norland after taking a few years out to work as a nanny. It was Norland’s comprehensive early childhood academic and practical course that made her want to return to education to further her knowledge and career opportunities as a graduate.
In her My Norland Story, Genna reflects on how she felt when her uniform arrived, applying theory to practice and student life as a first-year university student in Bath.
“I really liked the concept of doing placements and getting the practical elements but also doing the theory work as well. So when you’re in college, you do your cooking, sewing and your academic work, and then you also spend half the time on placements as well. I think getting to put the theory into practice and spend time with different children and different families is really special.
“It’s quite nice being in the uniform because you feel part of this community and everyone’s the same, everyone’s matching. Then when you get home and you get changed, you’re kind of out of that professional identity and feel like any other uni student in Bath.
“Coming in as a mature student, I was quite nervous because I hadn’t been in education for quite a while. I’d left school in 2018 and I think applying as a mature student was probably one of the best things I could have done, taking the time out to save money and get some life experience.”
