Richard Maccabee BA (Hons), PGCE, PGDip - Board Member

Richard has had a career in IT in a wide variety of organisations in the private sector and in education, many in or concerned with Further and Higher Education. He was Director of IT at the universities of Derby and London, with responsibilities extending to learning technologies, resources and libraries, and interim Director of IT at Coventry University. At the University of London, he led a function providing IT and learning services to over 200 Higher and Further Education institutions across the UK supporting over 1 million students, operating on a commercial basis and successfully competing with private sector providers. In these roles, Richard had responsibility for departments of up to 200 people, with annual budgets of up to £10m.

Richard has extensive board level experience. He was a board member of the JISC Committee and was Chair of the Board of the East Midlands Metropolitan Area Network, providing internet connectivity to all the schools, colleges and universities in the area.

Before working in the education sector, he worked at IBM as a software developer and project manager, and at Boots as a senior manager. Richard has worked as a consultant with a European software developer specialising in how digital technologies provide opportunities to transform academic practices and improve administrative efficiency.

Richard has a first-class degree in mathematics from Oxford University, and postgraduate qualifications in education, business administration, and computing. He is passionate about the role of education in transforming lives.
